Ooo, I like your word choices here. They give us the backstory without any real exposition. You also do a really great job illustrating the before and the after – why the loss of the sword matters.

You gain when you lose. Power has its price and I guess the narrator had just about enough. This rather makes a nod to the sword of Damocles.
