Flash Fiction: Writer’s Block

A writer’s block is a writer’s worst nemesis, and I intended to defeat mine.

It has been a month since I have written anything. Any and all inspiration alluded me. I simply could not get my mind to weave words together. It had all been going well, until I decided to step out of my box. The greed of the lucrative contract offered to me, made me take that step. There I was wrting about success stories, and now I needed to write short stories themed around murders. I simply could not imagine how a murder took place, let alone the mind of a murderer; until I met that hobo.He was a nobody. It was easy kidnapping him, and now he sits in my wardrobe, bound and gagged.

I finally get to beat my nemesis, with a rather practical approach…

Flash Fiction: Not Santa Claus

I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus. I did. Well, not Santa, but some fat bearded dude, who wasn’t my dad…

It wasn’t a Christmas night. I was just a little boy and I had been tucked into bed by my mum and dad. I had awoken in the night to visit the washroom. I was walking past my parent’s bedroom when I decided to peek inside. It was kind of dark, but to my shock, I saw the act with my eyes. The man looked like Santa Claus, complete with a long white beard and the red overalls. I could not spot my dad in the room. I was too shocked to say anything and I went back to my room. I never spoke about it, but I remembered.

Many years later, during a particularly boozy lunch with my parents, the discussion had taken a christmas turn. Encouraged by my buzz, I blurted out what I had seen as a kid. I saw my mother’s eyes widen in shock and a wide grin appear on dad’s face.

That day I learnt about mum’s Santa fetish…

Flash Fiction: Sixty Eight

Hello Readers,

Apologies first. I have been on vacation in Australia(loving it here) and have had little opportunity to blog. For now, here’s a new flash fiction which is my first entry in Tanmay Jain’s FTS Project. Here it goes:

There was something extraordinarily ordinary about murder that people just didn’t get!

It was the natural order of things. A hunter hunts and prey gets murdered. Yet, us humans deem to curb our natural instincts. Our societies condone murders and have made laws protecting the prey. It makes sense, since most of the lawmakers are prey themselves.

I don’t take these laws too seriously anymore There was a time when I did that. I believed the laws and joined the military to protect the prey. A few close encounters knocked some sense into me. I defected. Went off the radar and began doing what I was born for. I am quite good at it too. Sixty seven on my kill list and no cop has even got close to figuring my identity. Number sixty eight should be fun.

I’ve never killed with a screwdriver before…

Finish The Story: The Mystery Of The Stone Circle- Part 5

Teresa, aka The Haunted Wordsmith, started a story, “The Mystery of the Stone Circle,” and tagged Fandango to pick it up where she left off and to write part two.

Here’s Teresa’s part one:

Sammy finished stuffing the leftover food and makeshift kitchen into his pack, which Geri strapped the tent onto the side of his pack. As the pair started back on the trail, the morning sun cast them in a golden glow. The weather that week had been everything a hiker could ever hope for — cool evenings, warm mornings, and just enough mist in the afternoon to keep the hot summer sun at bay.

“I think it’s just over that crest,” Geri said, stuffing the map and compass back into the pocket in his cargo pants.

Sammy nodded. “Good, I’m tired of all these switchbacks. Throw a rope down and let us hike straight up.”

Geri laughed and slapped Sammy on the arm as he passed him. “Race you to the top.”

Sammy groaned but chuckled and shook his head at his friend. Ever since third year’s sports parade and carnival, Geri was always on the go. That’s one of the things that attracted Sammy to him, although he knew they would never be anything more than friends. Until four months ago when he served as Geri’s best man, he had always held out a little hope.

“Told ya!” Geri shouted from the top of the trail, pointing into the valley below.

“Man,” Sammy said, panting, “that’s amazing.”

They stood on the crest of the hill and looked at the concentric circles etched in the ground and the various stones that jutted out of the ground as if something from deep within was trying to speak.

“You know,” Geri said as they headed down toward the ancient ruin, “they say that this was built by …

Fandango at This, That, and the Other wrote part two:

…aliens who landed here eons ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the planet. These extraterrestrial beings attempted to colonize Earth, but the same giant asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, also put an end to the aliens’ attempt to make a home here on Earth.”

Sammy looked at Geri and shook his head. “Oh my God,” he said. “Did you take a hit on some of that potent ganja I have in my backpack? Seriously, Geri, you can’t really believe that.”

“Look at it, Sammy,” Geri said, somewhat defensively. “Clearly what we’re looking at is not man-made. Those are perfect circles within perfect circles and they cover several square miles along the valley floor. And that pile of huge boulders in the center. How do you think they got there? I’ll tell you. They are what’s left of a giant temple the aliens built in honor of their god.”

“I never realized what a nut job you are, dude,” Sammy said. “You’re either suffering from altitude sickness and exhaustion, or you’re just plumb loco.”

“Okay, Sammy,” Geri said. “If you’re so damn smart, what’s your explanation for what we’re looking at?”

Sammy took a deep breath and said, “It’s really very simple, Geri. You see…

=====================================================================

Msjadeli’s part three:

…according to my religious beliefs, it wasn’t extraterrestrials who came and arranged the stones, it was our very own Earth deities who did it. At least we agree that it wasn’t humans who made it.”

Geri’s jaw dropped open and he was speechless for a second, trying to absorb what Sammy had just said. “Sammy, can you tell me just how your theory isn’t any more outlandish than mine? There’s only one God, and he had nothing to do with this! OK OK enough, let’s just agree it wasn’t humans and go find some sticks and logs for the fire tonight.”

Although Geri was under the impression that they were there for a hiking adventure and photo shoot, Sammy was there for other reasons. If Geri knew what those reasons were he might have refused to come along.

According to the solar and lunar charts as they aligned with Mars’, tomorrow was the night the hieroglyphs on the center stones would glow and shoot out lights to the holiest of holy rocks in the configuration. Sammy had been practicing his ancient religion since childhood. Although he didn’t believe that the Gods and Goddesses were alive anymore, he did know that his ancestors had hollowed out the holiest of holy stones in the configuration and filled them with pure Andes gold and many gems that were found in the mountain river banks, gifts from the highlands in Spring. Sammy’s plan was to observe the glowing stones, mark them with a dot of glow-in-the-dark spray paint while they glowed, then afterwords dig them up to plunder the gold and gems.

In order keep Geri from finding out what was going on, Sammy had brought along a roofi to slip into Geri’s drink tomorrow night as they sat near the campfire. It was harmless, no side effects, and Geri would be no worse for wear afterwards.

They set up their tents and built a fire. Geri snapped a bunch of pictures as the sun set. After a few beers fireside they each went to their separate tents and fell asleep within moments, as they’d hiked for several hours that day. During the night each had very vivid dreams…

Padre’s Part Four:

Geri’s dream took him to a time when the hillsides beyond the circles were still covered with lush forest. He could see the sun rising through the mouth of the valley which faced all too perfectly eastwards. The red glow of the rising orb sent out finger-like beams into the valley.

Then just as the day brightened, seven tall figures emerged from the treeline. One of these wore a shining headdress, and an immense feathered cape fell from across her shoulders. She walked carefully to the spot where the centre of the rings now stood, and using her staff made a mark in the soil. She then gave instructions to her companions in an incomprehensible language. They each bowed to her and disappeared in separate directions into the surrounding woods.

As they ate trail mix for breakfast the following morning, Geri commented that he had had the strangest dream.

“What was it like?” Sammy asked with sincere interest.

Geri related the details to his friend, but then said, “They were just like normal people. Except they were really tall.”

“Like basketball player tall?” Sammy inquired.

“No. More like giraffe tall.”

“How do you know?” Sammy pressed.

“They were over half as tall as the trees.”

Geri pondered this, and tried to recall the elements of his own dream. He too could remember a tall somewhat feminine figure. But that wasn’t quite right. The figure was more “sexless” than female, and in his dream it wasn’t a feathered robe, but actual wings upon its back.

“How could we both have the same dream?” Sammy asked in bewilderment.

Then Geri let out a cry of astonishment. He held up his camera and pointed to one of the snaps he had taken the evening before. “Look at this . . . .”

Padre passed this on to the wondrous Crispina Kemp of Crimsonprose. However, her writing schedule did not allow her to continue this right now, so Padre passed it on to me. I hope I can fill in her boots! 🙂

My part:

“…photo!”

Sammy peered at the camera. He could make out a silhoutte near the stone circles. The outline seemed similar to the sexless figure he had seen in his dreams. He looked at Geri.

“Maybe, we should get a closer look at the stone circles. There definitely is something funky going on here.”

Geri nodded. After grabbing their stuff in a jiffy, the two boys made their way towards the centre of the circle. Geri led the way and as soon as he reached the centre of the circle, Sammy stepped back. Everything had gone to plan. He watched as the stones within the circle began glowing a deep red. Geri tried moving, but there was an invisible force that kept him glued to the centre or the circles. He shouted at Sammy.

“What’s happening? What is all this?”

Sammy smiled. His ancient religion told him about the true value of these stones. He wanted to steal them but in their complete state. To bring them to that state, a sacrifice was required. Sammy needed to sacrifice someone he loved. He knew Geri was never going to love him back in the same way. So he chose him as his sacrifice. Planted the drugs, and the fake photograph. It was the perfect plan.
As the stones glowed brighter, Geri began to fade, and by the time the stones were a deep blood red, Geri had disappeared into oblivion.Sammy cackled in triumph.

Boundless riches were now all his…

Finish The Story – Starting Over: Part 3

Teresa, The Haunted Wordsmith, started another Finish The Story challenge, this one titled “Starting Over.”

Here’s the first part:

Ask anyone living today what they would do if they had a time machine, and they would respond with, “stop him from destroying what we had.”

Their response was reasonable, of course, as it had only been fifty years since the fall of the United States and ten years since the world crossed the point of no return. We were doomed, and we knew it. Maybe that’s why we didn’t question when they came. No one questioned when they said we could go back and change things. No one asked what they stood to gain from offering the human race a chance to change the present, by changing the past. Maybe we should have.

It was a hot December morning when …

Part 2 by Fandango

It was a hot December morning when Tim was being interviewed. Tim wasn’t sure what to make of the experience. He was just a New America vlogger who had been very vocal about how, if he could, he’d love to go back to 2018 and change the course of human history. But here he was, sitting face to face — if you could call what the creature had a “face” — opposite an alien life form being interrogated.

“How would you proceed?” the alien asked Tim.

Tim didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t sure if these aliens could be trusted. What was in it for them? He knew he had to choose his words carefully. His life possibly depended upon it.

“The first thing I’d do,” Tim said, “would be….”

My contribution to the story:

Part 3:

“..to get rid of the power hungry leaders that plunged the world into chaos and I would get rid of him first.”

The alien interrogating him got up, and left the room. Before Tim could realize what was going on, green lasers materialized from the walls and targetted him. A flash of light blinded Tim and everything turned to black.

When his vision returned, Tim saw him sitting in front of him in a chair, bound to it. Tim noticed a gun pointed at the leader’s head…

I nominate Anurag Bakshi to continue the story!

I hope he accepts! 🙂

Finish The Story: Gusty Gulch

Another ‘Finish The Story’! 🙂

Here’s the story till now:

Part 1-Teresa- The Haunted Wordsmith

Gusty Gulch was named, well, because it was in a gulch and it was always windy. You can’t go up there and expect to have a good hair day – ever. Every day would start out the same, with a light southern breeze, then pick up by lunch, and by dinner the winds would howl through what few trees there were. Most of the town’s trees blew away during the storm of ’18.

Lizzy sat at the window and watched as the evening wind brought life into her quiet street. First there were a few birds that decided it would be best to cling to the ground rather than try to fly in that mess. Then came the tumbleweeds that blew in off the plateau. She chuckled remembering the time they decided to have a tumbleweed convention at her school – the school was closed for three days while the Gusty Gulch Fire Department cleaned it up.

Suddenly, she squinted her eyes and pressed her nose against the window. It can’t be, she thought. “Nah. Is it?”

“Is it what, dear?” her mother asked from the kitchen where she was busy drying the supper dishes.

Lizzy gasped and covered her mouth as another one appeared…then another. “Mom! Come look at this quick! You’ll never believe what just blew in!”

Her mother set the pot down and walked toward Lizzy wiping her hands with the drying towel. “What is it — OH GOOD LORD! Marv! MARV! Come look at this!”

Part 2 Jay-Lyn – The Wonderful and Wack World of One Single Mum;

Lizzy could hardly contain her excitement. Never had anyone survived the climb up and through the gulch. But coming along the street becoming larger and larger as he drew near, was a boy? But no boy could have survived the climb, the winds, the nothingness. Her eyes grew larger and suddenly unable to contain herself any longer, threw open the door and ran into the street.

Planting herself firmly in the middle of the stranger’s path, Lizzy set hands to hips and waited. As he sauntered along she took in his appearance. Tallish, slim build, brown hair that in places was a lighter shade. Closer he came, until he stood in front of her staring at her with luminescent green eyes. Her breath caught in her throat and Lizzy felt her face flush red.

“Hello,” she stammered. “I am Lizzy. How did you get here?”

“The ship dropped me at the precise location where the winds are a force lessened as it spreads itself out. How did you get here?”

Lizzy stared at him head cocked to the side as she contemplated the absurdity of his speech.

“I was born here. Where were you born?”

“You were born here? On this planet I mean?” incredulous the boy stared at her. “No one has ever been able to gain a foothold in the atmosphere but now that the sentient being is falling to sleep the winds have begun to lessen.”

Lizzy’s mouth dropped open. What was he talking about?

Part 3- Rory from a Guy Called Bloke and K9 Doodlepip

Lizzy was trying to fathom what this boy with those fantastically dazzling eyes, and handsomely good looks was … no stop that Lizbeth right this minute! More importantly who was he? “The sentient being is falling asleep?” Was all she found herself saying.

The boy looked at her and smiled, “Yes of course, who else? So going back to what you said, you are of this planet, as in really?”

“This planet, as in Gusty? Yes, l told you, l was born here, that’s my house back there behind me, where l live with my parents and my Brother.

“Parents … Brother … mmm, so you still use those terms then to describe your clans folk?”

“Clans folk? Look, seriously now – how did you get here, who is the sentient being, how do they lessen the wind and what do you mean ship?”

“So many questions,” the boy still looking at Lizzy said, shaking his head.”So your speech, the way you deliver your voice to me, is this the only way you can communicate?”

“The only way? Well we have phones you know, and people speak to each other, so yes?” Lizzy answered, now totally baffled.

“Right, that is interesting. When Kleidox 17^Urk asked me to visit here, I didn’t get the impression you couldn’t communicate properly. I was of the belief that you were more advanced. I don’t like communicating this way, and my Translilcator struggles with this, which is quite extraordinarick.”

“Extraordinarick? Don’t you mean extraordinary?” LIzzy asked, still none the wiser!

“I don’t know, but okay l will take your words for it.” Green eyes answered. “Is this it, all there is to your planet, l mean it’s all a bit well, ugly and isolated isn’t it?”

“What? Look l really have to insist, and find myself now speaking on behalf of Gutsy Gulch but who are YOU, and what do you want? Really?” Lizzy demanded now stretching up to her full height of five feet and seven inches, and in so doing noted that this newcomer, had to be close to six and half feet! Her neck was starting to feel the strain of looking up at him!

“Okay, my name is Klattunichiox 23^^ and my serial number is ^**G54^^t8, but as you are a bit less than l thought you can just call me Klatt! From my understanding of your primitive communication you are Lippy, or Likky or Lixxy or something. How l got here was simple, Ship Kjhg94 third Sector Transporter dropped me off on the 5th wind and l glided with the aid of my portal mirror down to this ugly place. I am here on a gathering mission for resources for my own Sphere Jugglodonix 657 of the Outer Saturnus Orbs. However, judging by your ever widening eyes, l am here on a visit to see if this planet has got anything valuable to take back home with me where upon l can approach Kleidox 17^Urk with a view to partial inhabitation for other Jugglods whilst taking a much needed break from their daily taskings. What species are you by the way?” Klatt asked.

OH no, Lizzy thought to herself, this Klatt fellow is another tourist! “I am a Zyphodian, and before you say anything more Klatt we were here first and we don’t need any Jugglods or whatever your species is coming in and moving on our turf for “holidays,” Lizzy shouted now feeling quite serious.

“I have got orders to terminate any resistence you know?” Klatt said with a smile on his face and his left hand slowly reaching for his ….

Part 4 – Fandango: This, That and the Other

Lizzy’s eyes suddenly turned red and before Klatt could remove his weapon from its holster, Lizzy shot a laser beam from her eyes that burned Klatt’s hand right off.

“What the fl^rk!” Klatt exclaimed.

“You think we Zyphodians are weak and helpless, don’t you, Klatt?” Lizzy said. “Well, we are not a species to be trifled with and I suggest that, if you know what’s good for, you best march right back to the gulch and transport yourself back to Jughead, or whatever stupid planet you came from.”

But before Lizzy could get out her next word, the sky turned pitch black.

Now comes my part…

Klatt smiled, clutching on to his sizzling arm.

“Well Zyphodian, I guess you are not species to be trifled with. I made the mistake of underestimating you. Won’t happen again.”

Lizzy backed up, staring at the landing crafts descending from the black sky.

Klatt laughed.

“My team’s here. Scared now, Zyphodian? Let me show you something else that will terrify you.”

Lizzy wanted to scream, raise an alarm. But, her vocal chords were not responding.

Klatt winced as his blasted arm began vibrating violently. Suddenly, the old arm burst with a splash of blood, and its place appeared a brand new arm.

“The Jugglods are eternal…”

Now, I nominate the brilliant Ramya Tantry to continue the tale…

FTS Project #4: Emperor’s Knights

The Emperor had summoned his Knights..and they had answered his summons. They knew that it was a matter of great importance. They waited patiently as their Emperor began to address them..

“Brave Knights, I have need of your skills yet again.”

The Knights traded glances. Their Emperor, the Great King had summoned them after a year. It had been a year of peace for the kingdom. The Knights had whiled away their time in wining, dining and other forms of entertainment. However, their warrior souls craved action, a chance to show off their power and might yet another time. Each knight present was excited at the prospect of a new battle. They spoke in unison.

“We are your eternal servants, Emperor. Command us. What is our mission?”

The king smiled weakly.

“The matter is urgent. The Queen has lost her favorite pearl necklace and nobody can find it. Your quest requires you to find it with haste.”

The Knights looked  at each other in disbelief, and shrugged their shoulders.

Such were the perils of peace…

FTS Project #3: Punished

I woke up with a severe hangover. I made my way to the bathroom lazily. I glanced at the mirror wondering if I looked as terrible as I felt. I stood staring in horror at the grotesque skull grinning at me… The sight of the skull made me freeze in my tracks. I stopped grinning at the mirror, and the skull stopped grinning back. I quickly touched my palms on my face, only to make contact with bones. I looked around in panic, and spotted her, leaning back on the wall of my washroom. She smiled at me in a sultry manner. “You don’t remember my name do you?” I tried to calm myself down and reply, but it was not working. “That’s fine. At least you remember the great time we had in bed, don’t you? That’s all I was supposed to be no? Like all those other girls you meet?” I tried to think back to yesterday. I could only remember meeting her at the club and having drinks with her. After that my memory went blank. “Poor darling. You probably remember nothing after that bit of chemical in your drink worked its magic.” I composed myself and got ready to grab her. She tsked and winked at me. “You did commit a sin, you know…The sin of lust. You had to be..” I charged at her, but she vanished in an instant, leaving only her voice behind in the air, “..PUNISHED!”
