Flash Fiction: Spike

“Gather around now, folks.”

I followed the rest of the tourists as they shuffled forward to see what our guide was saying. She stood pointing at a large moss-covered spire.

“This is the last of what Bran Castle has to offer you. An actual spike erected by the mephistophelian Vlad Tepes himself. You know, it is such a matter of coincidence, that today also happens to be his birthday.”

I moved closer to the spike to listen to the guide more clearly.

“It is such spikes, that The Count used to torture and ultimately kill his enemies. He would enjoy watching them piled on the spikes, drenched in their own blood. However, evil though he was, he was no vampire as suggested by literature and myths. He was no immortal being of darkness, he was just a cruel ruler.”

I smiled to myself, eyeing the guide’s neck.

Not really….
