Flash Fiction: Fissure

I looked at the the perfectly pitched tents.

It was a dream opportunity for me, studying the great fissure. A huge opening in earth had suddenly developed. The world’s governments assembled a team of experts to study the fissure and I was invited to be a part of it. I was about to enter my tent when I heard Dr. Manheim’s voice. I saw him standing at the fissure’s edge and ran up to him. He pointed inside the fissure and whispered.

“Is that an eye?”

Not one, but two gigantic eyes, and a snarling mouth were slowly getting closer…

Flash Fiction: Holiday Season

It was holiday season, and I was back at my forest cottage.

I saw my neighbour, old man Nelson chopping up wood. I greeted him.

“Hey Mr. Nelson! Good to see you again.”

In his typical style, he grunted at me.

“Why do you continue chopping up the firewood, even now? There are better options available. You can switch to electric heating.”

He wiped the beads of sweat off from his forehead and gruffly replied.

“You kids of today won’t understand.”

I smiled at him.

“Come on, Mr. Nelson. I’m sur I will understand if you tell me.”

Old man Nelson rested his arms on the axe.

“Look kid, I believe in giving every guest that visits my lodge an authentic experience. A fireplace is a part of that experience.”

I nodded at while smiling to myself. I guessed that the bad food and the lack of services were also a part of cheap lodging experience…

Flash Fiction: Bad Master

He was a bad master.

No two ways about it. He did not care for me. Did not think about the condition he kept me in. He did not spare any thought about how the roads he was forcing me on, were damaging me. He was blind to my pain and deaf to my pleas. Luckily, master was also dumb.

He left the satanic book lying around. I made sure to read it. Then one day, we were traveling together, I decided to make use of what I had learnt from the book. A hell-spawn appeared in front of us, dragged my master away, and made quick work of him. The flames emerging from his stomach took his soul straight to hell.

He should have never underestimated his glorious steed…

Flash Fiction: Paper Boat

My little nephew Sage, was a bundle of fun.

Like most little kids, he was always on the lookout for new ways to have fun. A couple of days ago, I made him a paper boat, and his eyes widened as if it was the most wondrous thing he had seen. Today, he asked me for another paper boat. I promptly complied. He thanked me with a kiss on my cheek and rushed out with his friends. I could hear them going into the backyard screaming Red Sea at the top of their voices. My interest piqued, I got up and jogged behind the kids, asking them what they meant by Red Sea. They led me towards a small red puddle, on which my paper boat was floating. I realized instantly that it was a puddle of blood.

The smiles on the kids faces told me they knew that too…

The kids walked up to the car, hoping to find their friend inside.

Gathering their courage, they peeped into the car. A face stared back at them. The boys screamed upon looking at the pale adult face. A green liquid oozed out of the deathly eyes. The boys backed away from the car, filled with dread.

They heard Kye screaming out for help once again, from deeper into the forest. Before the boys could recover they heard a voice coming from behind them.

Flash Fiction: Unexpected Walk

“You know, it was unexpectedly nice, this walk.”

He looked at her with a quizzical expression.

“Why unexpected?”

She laughed nervously.

“Well, because of what I had heard about you from here and there.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“And what had you heard from here and there?”

She blushed slightly and gave his hand a gentle squeeze.

“Oh, nothing! Just that you are kind of weird.”

He laughed.

“Oh am I, then?”

She smiled as she hugged him.

“Not at all. I am glad you picked this path to walk on. These vines make such a beautiful archway.”

“Ummm..vines?”

She screamed out loud upon making the serpentine discovery, before running helter-skelter…
