Flash Fiction: Wood Piano

It lay untouched by the entrance.

The eccentric restaurateur had purchased the wooden piano from the antique shop. He thought that it ornamentally fit in with his restaurant, The Musical Meal. After placing it by the entrance, he did not give it a second thought. He did not look at it until a few months later, when he heard a commotion outside the restaurant. He rushed outside to find a small crowd gathered. The people were all clapping and cheering for a ragged looking old man sitting at the wood piano, playing it.

As he played, flowers bloomed on it…

The pale man got up from his seat and walked up to the kids.

“Who are these runts, Billy?”

Billy introduced the two kids to Special Agent Perseus.

“This is Gary, and this is Roger. I found them in the woods when I was scouting. Their friend, Kye, was taken by it.”

Perseus stared at the two kids before turning around.

“Come, sit at the fire.”

Gary turned to Perseus.

“Sir, what is that thing?”

Perseus stared at the woods.

“That thing, is an Acheri. And it is my prey.”

Perseus smiled weakly as he drew his heavy silver pistol…

The boys gasped and turned slowly.

The found a young man dressed in a black suit smiling at them. On his hips lay holstered a huge pistol. The kids began backing away. The man raised his arms in the air and went down on one knee, making sure the kids could see him eye to eye.

“Hey! Don’t worry, guys. I won’t hurt you.”

Gary and Roger stopped in their tracks. The man continued smiling at them as he put one hand inside his pocket and fished out a badge.

“You see kids, I’m Agent Billy. You are safe with me.”

Gary spoke softly.

“Do you know what that face was? And our friend, he has disappeared. He was screaming, and..”

Billy nodded.

“Yes, I know that kids. Okay, first things first, what are your names?”

“I’m Gary and this is Roger. And our friend Kye is missing.”

Billy stood up and walked towards the kids.

“Okay, we will find Kye. I promise. All I need to know is, do you trust me?”

Gary looked at Roger. Roger nodded slowly.

“We trust you Agent Billy.”

Billy smiled again and adjusted his glasses.

“I have a camp set up close by, where my partner is waiting for me. If someone knows how to get Kye back, its my partner. Come, lets go to the camp. Its not safe out here. Just keep your eyes peeled, okay?”

The two boys nodded in unison and began following closely behind Billy, who led them deeper into the woods. In a few minutes, the boys found themselves facing a huge hollow tree, surrounded by perimeter lights. In front of the tree, the boys saw a ghostly figure sitting cross legged facing them. Billy ruffled the boys’ hair.

“That’s my partner, Special Agent Perseus.”

The kids walked up to the car, hoping to find their friend inside.

Gathering their courage, they peeped into the car. A face stared back at them. The boys screamed upon looking at the pale adult face. A green liquid oozed out of the deathly eyes. The boys backed away from the car, filled with dread.

They heard Kye screaming out for help once again, from deeper into the forest. Before the boys could recover they heard a voice coming from behind them.

“Lost are we?”

The three boys kept their eyes peeled.

For a split second, Gary thought he spotted a shadow moving inside the fog. However, it vanished as soon as he realised he had seen it. In fact, all of the fog began receding into the denser woods.

Gary sighed in relief and turned to face his friends, only to realise that only Roger was standing there. Roger and Gary heard their friend’s cries for help coming from the woods.

Without a word, they followed his voice. It led them to a clearing, where they saw a vintage abandoned car.

Kye continued screaming…

The boys could hear the grating sound getting closer.

They huddled together forming a circle, their eyes scanning their surroundings. Their brows furrowed with concentration. The trio was now sure about it.

The three kids stepped into the woods in the fading sunlight.

Roger lead the way, followed by Kye and Gary. The trio were on a quest to retrieve their ball. The fading umbrage of the trees worried Gary. The sun was setting, and he knew that navigating the intricate forest paths in the dark, was going to be a task. It would be difficult even with the mini flash light he was carrying. As they went deeper, a fog began settling around the trees. It remained static, refusing to clear away. The three kids bravely held their nerves. Until they heard sounds coming from the fog.

They resembled the sound made by cheese graters…

The kids stared at the woods.

Gary placed an arm on Roger’s shoulder.

“You know we are not supposed to go there right?”

Roger shrugged.

“Yeah, I know. But that’s my favourite football that Kye kicked into the woods. I am going to get it back, and Kye is coming with me.”

Roger looked at the whimpering Kye. The smaller boy was clearly more afraid of Roger than he was of the forest. Gary crossed his arms.

“No! I don’t want to go there and find out what the adults were so scared about.”

Roger snorted.

“Ha! I hope we find what scared them. Any way, move out of the way, Gary.”

Gary was no match for Roger’s strength. He gave in and stepped aside. Roger walked passed triumphantly, dragging Kye along. Gary sighed. He could not go home alone, anyway.

He followed his friends into the woods…
